"After many years working almost exclusively as a freelance commercial illustrator I made the leap from being someone who drew to being an Artist. Part of this transition - the trial by fire portion - was to continue in the vein in which I had primarily trained myself up to that time - drawing in pen and ink - however the challenge I set for myself was that each of my new, "serious" drawings had to be accomplished entirely in ink. No initial pencil drawings. No sketching. I would begin laying out the composition with quick ink strokes and refine from there. If at any point I grew unhappy with either composition or the actual drawing itself I had no choice but to start completely over. Still I believe it was necessary to help me shift my focus onto what I was creating; on the emotion and ideas driving a creation not the style in which it was rendered. In this way I advanced beyond commercial art."
